Greek officials deny reports about Papoulias – Rehhagel meeting

Sources close to the Greek President have denied reports that Karolos Papoulias will meet with former Greece coach Otto Rehhagel later this month, Skai said Thursday.

Germany’s tabloid Bild newspaper earlier this week reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel has enlisted the 74-year-old soccer manager to act as a special envoy to Greece in a bid to improve the relations of the two states and encourage tourism in the debt-hit country.

Bild said Rehhagel would travel to Athens end of March for a three-day visit, where he would meet with Papoulias and Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.

Sources told Skai no such meeting has been scheduled. It was not clear whether Rehhagel would travel to Greece.

Born in Essen, “King Otto” coached the Greek national team from 2001 to 2010, leading the squad to the shock Euro 2004 triumph in Portugal.
