Samaras hopes EU summit will focus on growth and job creation

Arriving in Brussels for a European Union leaders’ summit, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras stressed the need for Europe to focus on ways to create jobs, particularly for young Greeks and Europeans.

“Europe is turning its focus to growth, which is the number one European problem today,» he said. «This is the number one European problem because the lack of growth creates unemployment, especially youth unemployment.”

A few hours before Samaras’s arrival, the latest statistics in Greece confirmed that the unemployment rate had risen to 26 percent in the final quarter of 2012.

“In Greece, this is even more severe because we suffer from the highest unemployment rate in Europe, the highest youth unemployment rate in Europe and the highest unemployment rate in our whole history,» he said.

“So, you realize this is an important meeting we have today.”
