Children’s hospital heart surgery unit to reopen
The cardiac surgery department of the Aghia Sophia Children’s Hospital is expected to reopen next week, following appeals from medical associations and families of children with heart conditions.
According to “Child’s Heart,” a nongovernmental organization that assists children with congenital heart disease, the only other available medical facility, the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, was unable to cover the needs of about 1,500 young patients.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Andreas Lykourentzos on Friday announced plans to hire 600 regular and 800 auxiliary doctors to make up for serious shortages of medical personnel on Greek islands.
