Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios to attend Pope inauguration
Patriarch Vartholomaios is expected to attend Pope Francis’s inauguration ceremony in Rome on Tuesday, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate announced on Monday.
He is the first ecumenical patriarch to participate in such an event since the Great Schism between the Orthodox and the Catholic churches in 1054.
According to the Istanbul-based Patriarchate, the decision to take part in the Pope’s inaugural mass was the result of the growing dialogue between the two churches.
