EC finds nine illegal dumps still in operation in Messinia

Nine illegal landfills continue to operate in the southwestern Peloponnesian Prefecture of Messinia, a recent report by the European Commission has found.

According to an official list published by the EC, there are another 25 dumps in the prefecture that are currently in the process of being brought up to European standards, while regional authorities are conducting studies into the construction of a central waste management unit, which they plan to put into operation as of 2015.

The EC study further found that eight illegal dumps continue to take in trash in the prefectures of Arcadia and Corinthia, also in the Peloponnese.

Greece faces millions of euros in fines and has been frequently reprimanded by the European Commission for failing to comply with European waste-management regulations.
