Athens children’s heart surgery unit reopens after 18 months
The heart surgery unit at the Aghia Sofia children’s hospital in Athens is due to reopen on Wednesday after being closed for the last 18 months.
Two surgeries have been planned for Wednesday and it has been decided that the department will not deal with emergency cases but will undertake surgeries for patients who have been examined regularly and whose operations have been planned beforehand.
The only other available facility for children’s heart surgery while the Aghia Sophia was closed was the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center, but a backlog of some 1,500 cases built up during that time.
