Former Thessaloniki prefect in court for breach of duty

A Thessaloniki court on Thursday started hearing the trial of former Prefect Panayiotis Psomiadis and five former prefectural officials who are charged with breach of duty in connection with Lake Koroneia.

Psomiadis is accused of failing to order the required environmental inspections and of reducing fines on local manufacturers found to have polluted the lake. Separately, a court in Thesprotia imposed a three-and-a-half year suspended prison sentence on former Prefect Vassilis Giogiakas after he was found guilty of breach of duty and bribe taking.

Giogiakas was convicted after being caught on video accepting money in a rolled-up newspaper.
