Former governor gets suspended jail sentence
Former Central Macedonia Governor Panayiotis Psomiadis was given a 15-month suspended jail sentence on Friday after being found guilty of breach of duty and faith with regard to the protection of Koroneia Lake, near Thessaloniki.
An appeals court in the northern port city found that Psomiadis had failed to ensure the necessary monitoring for pollution in the lake and the imposition of financial penalties on companies found to have dumped pollutants in the water.
Psomiadis blamed the delay in imposing the fines on bureaucracy.
