Police looking for armed robbers after death of 25-year-old motorist in crossfire

Police were scouring the Peloponnese on Saturday for signs of the gunmen who opened fire on officers after fleeing a raid on a taverna on the Athens-Thebes national highway on Friday night, causing the death of a 25-year-old woman who was caught in the crossfire.

The woman was hit by fire from a Kalashnikov assault rifle wielded by one of the robbers, according to police. She had been driving through Isthmia, near the Corinth Canal, when she was hit shortly before midnight and died of her injuries at around 3 a.m. in hospital.

Police set up roadblocks in Corinth, Argolida and Arcadia to track down the fugitives, who fled in a stolen black sports utility vehicle.
