Zakynthos town hall arson trial starts with a plot twist

The trial of four men accused of trying to torch Zakynthos Town Hall last summer – including former Mayor Constantinos Tsagaropoulos and ex-treasurer Vassilis Steriotis – opened on the Ioanian island on Friday.

However, it was interrupted by the revelation that a man claiming to be related to Steriotis had appeared at the local police station when the case first came to light and handed over seven garbage bags full of half-burnt treasury documents.

The court ordered the witness, who had told investigators that he found the documents buried on a farm, to come forward to testify, postponing the trial until April 18.
