Prosecutor calls for guilty verdicts for four in privacy trial
A public prosecutor recommended on Friday to an appeals court in Athens that four people be found guilty of violating the privacy rights of former Culture Ministry general secretary Christos Zachopoulos, who tried to commit suicide in 2007 in a scandal that rocked the conservative government at the time.
Prosecutor Yiannis Angelis said that Evi Tsekou, who had an affair with Zachopoulos, her lawyer Christos Nikoloutsopoulos, publisher Themos Anastasiadis and journalist Yiannis Makriyiannis should be convicted.
Tsekou is accused of recording herself having sex with Zachopoulos and then, with the help of her lawyer, trying to convince media outlets to take up her story.
Anastasiadis is accused of secretly copying the material and trying to pass it to the office of then Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.
The prosecutor suggested that Anastasiadis was using the sensitive footage as a bargaining chip with the government because he was being investigated by the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE).
