Suspicious Greek pension payments come under scrutiny

More than 1,600 pensions issued to the relatives of deceased pensioners are being examined due to suspicion of fraud, the Labor Ministry said on Wednesday.

As part of a wider effort to clamp down on the payment of pensions that are claimed under false pretences, officials have been conducting checks on 114,288 pensions paid by the fund for self-employed workers to the wives, husbands or unmarried daughters of retirees who have passed away.

The 1,648 cases deemed suspicious will be investigated more thoroughly, the ministry said.
