Migrant shooters arrested during minister visit to site [UPDATE]

Police on Friday arrested the three farm foremen accused of opening fire on a crowd of Bangladeshi strawberry pickers in Nea Manolada in the Peloponnese and injuring 28 of them.

The arrest of the foremen, aged 21, 27 and 39, came as Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias visited the area.

Shortly before the arrests were announced, Dendias said that Greek authorities would not deport the victims of Wednesday’s shooting, adding that Labor Minister Yianns Vroutsis would pass legislation in Parliament allowing police to crack down on uninsured work.

Dendias made his comments during a visit to the police station of Varda that is handling the investigation into the incident. Seven of the migrants remained hospitalized on Friday,

The brutal assault does not only violate Greek laws but also every sense of humanity and has no relation to Greece’s culture, Dendias said after speaking with local police chiefs.

The minister visited three of the injured migrant workers at the university hospital in Patra and was expected to visit the strawberry farm in Manolada where the Bangladeshi migrants work as well as the camp where they sleep.
