Obama hails US-Greek ties at White House reception

After a memorial service for the victims of Monday’s bombing at the Boston marathon, US President Barack Obama emphasized the strength of ties between America and Greece during a White House reception marking Greek Independence Day on March 25.

At the reception on Thursday night, which was attended by Archbishop Demetrios, Obama said the US and Greece «have stood side by side» and that the people of both nations have learned that «democracy blooms» when we respect each other’s differences, stick by the principles that unite us and move forward with a common goal.

The president also emphasized the importance of “ancient Greek values” in inspiring America’s founding fathers.

Vice President Joe Biden, for his part, noted that the words “Greece” and “freedom” were synonymous and praised the achievements of the Greek-American community.
