Athens Mayor backs plans for Sunday trading
Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said Friday he was firmly in favor of the government’s proposal for stores in the capital to open on at least seven Sundays every year.
“The experience of all major cities where shops open on Sundays is positive,” he said after meeting Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis.
“We should not forget that Athens has the potential to attract many more tourists than it does at the moment. For tourists, it is important for shops to be open on all the days they are visiting.”
The government’s plan foresees smaller shops being able to open every Sunday throughout the year, should they want. Kaminis said that the City of Athens was stepping up efforts to make the capital a tourist destination and had invited 80 tour operators for talks over the weekend.
