Greek justice minister visits Grevena Prison in wake of brutality claims
Justice Minister Antonis Roupakiotis visited a prison in Grevena, northern Greece, on Friday in the wake of allegations by a nongovernmental organization that inmates at a number of correctional facilities had been beaten and humiliated by officers of the police’s special EKAM squad and guards.
Roupakiotis has ordered an emergency investigation into the claims made on Wednesday by the Initiative for Inmates’ Rights that on Saturday EKAM officers had beaten and forced inmates at Grevena Prison to strip and crawl on all fours around the gymnasium as officers conducted searches of their cells.
The police have refuted the allegations, saying the cell searches were conducted by prison officials with a prosecutor present.
