Greece abandons plans for EU-Western Balkan countries summit
Greece is set to abandon plans to hold a summit between European Union member states and Western Balkan countries in Thessaloniki early next year, Kathimerini understands. The summit had been planned as part of the rotating presidency of the EU, which Greece will hold between January and June next year.
“Greece proposes to convene an EU-Western Balkans summit aimed at adopting a political declaration that will set a specific, ambitious-but-realistic target date for completion of the accession processes of the Western Balkan countries,” the Greek Foreign Ministry said in February 2011.
However, sources have told Kathimerini that the ministry no longer believes that there is sufficient interest from the various parties for the summit to be held next year.
