Tsipras in Portugal on anniversary of Carnation Revolution

Leftist SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras will be in Portugal on Thursday and Friday for the anniversary of the Carnation Revolution when the Portuguese rose up and peacefully overthrew the right-wing dictatorship that had ruled the nation for half a century.

Tsipras will take part in the commemoration march and give a speech while he is expected to hold a series of meeting with local political officials.

During a speech at the Hellenic American Chamber on Wednesday, Tsipras, whose party is neck and neck with conservative New Democracy in opinion polls, spoke of the need for “effective alliances” particularly among states on the southern European periphery.
