Guilty verdicts recommended for 19 of 24 suspected racketeers in Thessaloniki

A public prosecutor in Thessaloniki recommended to a local court on Thursday that it find 19 out of 24 people suspected of being part of a local protection racket guilty.

Dimitris Naintos said that the gang blackmailed cafe and bar owners in Thessaloniki and Halkidiki into paying its members protection money.

He said three similar gangs operated in the city.

The prosecutor said the gang was led by three brothers but recommended that their mother, one of the 24 suspects, be acquitted.

The trial was adjourned until May 13.
