Athens municipal crews tear down illegal structures at central hot-spot
Municipal officials on Thursday dismantled illegal extensions including pergolas and patios outside eight restaurants and cafes in the central Athens district of Gazi, popular for its bars and nightlife.
Municipal teams used sledgehammers and pneumatic drills to demolish the illegal structures as part of City Hall’s campaign to free up public space that has been encroached upon by private businesses. There were no protests against the crackdown as the owners of the enterprises had been warned about it a month ago.
