Municipal workers strike to protest layoffs
Contract workers at local and regional authorities walked off the job on Friday, joining a 24-hour strike called by their union POE-OTA in protest at the government’s plans for layoffs in local authority services.
Staff on permanent contracts were to walkout from 11.30 a.m. until the end of their shift and protesters were to stage a rally in central Karaiskaki Square at noon before marching to the Administrative Reform Ministry which is overseeing the overhaul in the civil service.
