Locals protest works at Skouries gold mining site

Residents in Halkidiki, northern Greece, on Saturday protested against works by a gold mining firm in Skouries to open up access roads in the forest.

Representatives of Hellenic Gold, which is in charge of the controversial project, said the firm has been granted permission to cut down trees at the site.

A Forestry Service representative was expected in the area.
