Deputy foreign minister dispatched to Beirut over missing bishops

A week after two prominent Syrian bishops were kidnapped by armed rebels in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo, Greece’s Deputy Foreign Minister Costas Tsiaras has been dispatched to Beirut as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to trace the missing clerics and ensure their safe release.

Greek Orthodox Archbishop Paul Yazigi and Syriac Orthodox Archbishop Yohanna Ibrahim were last Monday seized near the northern commercial and industrial hub of Aleppo, which is contested by rebels and forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.
