Vroutsis to meet Manolada strawberry growers

Amid calls for a boycott on strawberries from Nea Manolada in the Peloponnese following the shooting of more than 30 migrant laborers demanding long-overdue pay by their foremen earlier this month, Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis will on Tuesday hold talks with strawberry growers in the area aimed at taking measures to save this year’s crop.

Strawberry exports are gradually getting back on track, producers say, but supermarkets in Greece still appear reluctant to place orders amid bad publicity from the incident. A team of labor inspectors has been sent to the site to establish possible violations in legislation.
