IKA fund employee arrested on suspicion of staging robberies and embezzling cash

A 47-year-old employee of Greece’s main social security fund, IKA, has been arrested in Thessaloniki on suspicion of falsely claiming to have been robbed so he cover up his embezzlement.

Police said that the suspect reported on Tuesday that 21,000 euros in IKA funds had been stolen while he had been on a short break.

Earlier in April, he had reported to police that an armed assailant had threatened him and forced him to hand over 25,000 euros in cash.

Police said that a search of his home and car netted some of the cash that had been stolen.
