Police arrest fugitive over armed robberies on banks, cash transfers

A fugitive who was allegedly part of a gang that carried out more than two dozen armed robberies, including one in which four policemen were shot and injured, has been arrested in Athens, police said on Thursday.

The 37-year-old, who was not named, was arrested earlier in the week in Peristeri, western Athens. There were two warrants for his arrest and he had already been convicted, in his absence, to a jail sentence of two-and-a-half years for forgery and smuggling.

The suspect and three others, who are already in custody, are alleged to have carried out 29 armed robberies in Attica and other parts of the country. In May last year, they allegedly shot at policemen pursuing them, leading to four officers being injured.
