Patra parents accused of abusing their three children remanded in custody

A prosecutor in Patra, western Greece, on Tuesday remanded in custody a married couple that is being charged with multiple sex abuse counts, including rape of minors and incest, after being arrested last week following accusations made by one of their four children.

The 40-year-old father, a construction worker, and 41-year-old mother are being accused of repeatedly raping three of their four children; two girls aged 17 and 16, and a boy aged 12. The fourth child, aged 8, is believed not to have suffered abuse.

The case came to light after the eldest of the two girls reported the rapes to a family member who subsequently called the hotline of the Smile of the Child nongovernmental organization, which specializes in abuse cases, and has been monitoring the four children since the case came to light, providing counseling to the three eldest.

Local media said that the father told the prosecutor he suffered from a drinking problem.
