Recycling wanes as crisis takes toll on Greeks’ consumption
The amount of recyclable waste collected last year was down by 11 percent compared to 2011 and has dwindled by a third since 2008, according to the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation (HERRCO), which attributed the slump to a drop in consumption provoked by the economic crisis.
HERRCO also blamed an inadequate public awareness campaign, which has resulted in the dumping of organic waste in recycling bins, and to the poorly planned distribution of recycling dumpsters.
