Immigrant pupils fear exam fallout

There is uncertainty about whether the children of immigrants living in Greece could face deportation if they sit the senior high school exams that are due to start on Friday.

Kathimerini has spoken to a number migrant groups that are concerned pupils lacking Greek citizenship and whose parents have failed to renew residence permits due to economic difficulties could encounter trouble if they sit the university entrance exams.

An Education Ministry source said that instead of an identity card, pupils could show a passport or visa to register for the exams. Migrant groups say that many of the children, who have been born here, do not have such paperwork.

Recently, the government halted the process of awarding citizenship to the children of migrants living legally in Greece.
