Court rejects local landfill appeals

The Council of State, the country’s highest administrative court, on Tuesday rejected as “groundless” the appeals of two Attica municipalities – Fyli and Marathon – against the creation of two new landfills to accommodate some of the prefecture’s trash, as an existing site in Fyli is said to be dangerously saturated.

Both the local authorities had appealed to the court to overturn earlier decisions allowing the construction of the facilities to go ahead, claiming that they violate certain provisions of the Greek Constitution as well as European laws for the protection of the environment.

The only course of appeal that the local authorities have now is to the court’s plenary session.
