Top policeman on trial for robbing migrant trader

The head of the police precinct in Rendi, southern Athens, goes on trial in a Piraeus court Wednesday charged with robbing a Pakistani store owner, trying to blackmail him and getting him arrested on trumped-up drugs charges.

Imtiaz Alam Jafari filed a complaint with police in February after the unnamed precinct chief allegedly stopped him and robbed him of 4,000 euros. Jafari claims to have received several threats by phone for him to withdraw the complaint.

Earlier this month a customer purchased an electric fan from his store and returned it before a police inspection revealed heroin hidden inside it. Charges against Jafari were dropped after security cameras at the store revealed what had happened.
