Golden Dawn says MP’s words were twisted by Australian broadcaster

Golden Dawn claimed on Wednesday that the words of its MP Ilias Panagiotaros had been intentionally misconstrued by Australian broadcaster SBS after the far-right lawmaker suggested in a TV program that Greeks should “kill the ones who were responsible for their problems” rather than commit suicide.

Interviewed as part of a feature on Golden Dawn for the Dateline program, Panagiotaros was asked who he suggested Greeks should kill. “Bankers, of course,” he replied.

In its statement, Golden Dawn claimed Panagiotaros had been speaking metaphorically about the “death of the corrupt post-junta system and the ability every Greek has to punish with his or her vote.”

The party also claimed that the footage had been “badly edited.”

In the program, the MP claimed Golden Dawn would like to resemble the Lebanon-based Islamic militant group Hezbollah.

“Golden Dawn wants to become, and will become, like Hezbollah in Lebanon, which is in effect a second government that helps even the last of its poor citizens,” he said.
