Parliamentary speaker vows action against deputies carrying guns

Parliamentary speaker Evangelos Meimarakis claimed on Thursday he would personally remove from the House any MPs refusing to comply with regulations that forbid them carrying firearms into the building.

Earlier this week, Meimarakis told parties that MPs would have to pass through metal detectors and any guns would have to be left in a designated room. Some MPs had recently complained about colleagues bearing guns in Parliament. Golden Dawn MPs have been stopped in the past.

“Policemen in Parliament do not have the right to search MPs but they can prevent them from entering if they detect them carrying guns,” said Meimarakis. “My message to MPs is that they should not dare enter Parliament because I will go down there and show them out myself, while also making their name public,” said the parliamentary speaker in response to a question about what would happen if lawmakers refuse to cooperate with police.
