Ex-AEK chairman Nikolaidis given suspended sentence for defamation

Former AEK striker and chairman Demis Nikolaidis received a suspended 15-month jail sentence on Monday after being found guilty of defamation.

The case relates to an incident in 2006, when the AEK team was criticized by supporters following a game against PAOK in Thessaloniki.

Then chairman Nikolaidis named the supporters he believed to be behind the verbal attacks and took legal action against them.

They responded by suing the former AEK and Atletico Madrid star. Nikolaidis dropped his action but the supporters did not and it was one of these suits that led to the 39-year-old being convicted.

Nikolaidis, who is married to singer Despina Vandi, did not appear in court.
