Two held in Thessaloniki for human trafficking racket
Police in Thessaloniki on Tuesday were questioning two men, a 32-year-old Bulgarian and an 18-year-old Iranian national, believed to be members of a cross-border human trafficking ring following an inspection on a van on the Egnatia Highway on Monday night.
The spot check on the van revealed that 11 undocumented immigrants, from Syria and Afghanistan, had been hidden inside.
Police believe that the two suspected smugglers had been aiming to smuggle the migrants out of Greece, to various countries in Western Europe. The suspected traffickers are alleged to have pocketed 39,000 US dollars from the would-be emigrants.
Officers said they were seeking other ring members.
