Police question suspected members of ‘subsidies’ racket

Six suspected members of a racket believed to have swindled thousands of euros from hotels and travel agencies by peddling false promises of securing them European Union subsidies were being questioned by police on Wednesday.

The five Greeks and one Romanian are alleged to have posed as state officials and to have secured “guarantees” of up to 7,000 euros from hoteliers and travel agency managers, ostensibly to secure them a spot in EU subsidy programs.

The racket swindled at least 46,000 euros out of the victims, police said.
