Police to review all gun licenses in wake of MPs’ row

In the wake of the debate over MPs carrying firearms in Parliament, the police are to form a three-member committee to check all the gun licenses issued in Greece. Police chief Nikos Papayiannopoulos said on Friday that the panel will assess whether the gun owner has the necessary skills to use the weapon.

The police chief announced the move a day after Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias demanded checks on all gun owners following an incident at Athens International Airport when a handgun belonging to Golden Dawn MP Antonis Gregos went off as he was handing it to security staff before boarding a flight.

The panel will have the power to withdraw owners’ gun licenses or to change the type of firearm for which there is a permit.
