ND deputy refuses to undergo security check in Parliament

New Democracy MP Sofia Voultepsi appears to have been the first lawmaker to fall foul of increased security measures in Parliament after allegedly refusing a request from police guards to check her bag.

Parliament Speaker Evangelos Meimarakis ordered security to be stepped up last week at Parliament’s entrance after complaints that some MPs were carrying guns into the House. He asked for all visitors, including deputies, to pass through metal detectors.

Voultepsi is alleged to have refused to allow her handbag to go through an X-ray machine. When reminded by the policeman about the new rules that apply, Voultepsi is alleged to have replied, “They should un-apply.”

The policeman is obliged to report the matter to Meimarakis.
