Panepistimiou Street revamp to be completed by 2016, minister says
A much-hyped project to revamp the center of Athens, involving the pedestrianization of central Panepistimiou Street and a revamp of shabby Omonia Square, will start mid-2014, Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis said on Monday, adding that the works should be complete by late 2016.
He said the project, designed by Dutch architects Okra, will cost 90 million euros that will come from the National Strategic Reference Framework (ESPA) and the Environment Ministry’s Operational Program Environment and Sustainable Development (EPPERAA).
“We are interested in turning theory into action,” Hatzidakis said.
