Retailer rebuffs bogus cleaning product charges

The 52-year-old owner of a supermarket chain charged with manufacturing and selling knockoff household detergents in Veria, northern Greece, has insisted that his business is clean.

According to the suspect’s lawyer, the bottling equipment seized during raids on two warehouses last week had been intended for medicinal alcohol.

In testimony to an investigating magistrate on Saturday, the 52-year-old claimed that the hundreds of containers of liquid seized by police were substandard products in storage.

Two other men have also been charged in connection with the case – a 45-year-old Greek and a 33-year-old Bulgarian.

All three received conditional release on Saturday.
