Attica bus drivers call for security as attacks are on the rise

Bus drivers in Attica are voicing concern about their own and their passengers’ security as attacks from gangs, especially at night and in run-down areas, become more frequent.

The union representing bus drivers, OSY, says that gangs often resort to vandalism and violence, prompting police patrols to keep an eye on routes in problem areas such as Menidi, Ano Liosia, Perama and Aspropyrgos.

“Police patrols cannot possibly escort buses, but they do make sure to drive along the routes at regular intervals in order to provide some sense of security,” Nikos Kouloumbaritsis, a union representative for bus drivers, said.

OSY added that attacks on foreign passengers from by far-right gangs are also on the rise.
