Court approves plan to curb protests
The Council of State has approved Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias’s plan to rein in small public demonstrations so they do not block roads.
The court said that the regulation was not aimed at curbing people’s right to demonstrate but at ensuring that city life was not disrupted.
Greece’s highest administrative court agreed that small demonstrations in cities of fewer than 100,000 inhabitants should not lead to traffic coming to a complete standstill.
Judges identified local police chiefs as the best placed officials to determine whether the demonstrations would be allowed to block roads or not.
They will have to issue an opinion in writing to protesters 24 hours before demonstrations take place.
