Family on sinking yacht brought in to safety

A family of five that ran into trouble off the Cycladic island of Kythnos on Sunday morning when their yacht began to take on water, has been brought to safety and is currently in the port of Lavrio in southeastern Attica, Coast Guard officials reported.

The family of five was enjoying a yacht trip around the Cycladic islands when the anchor opened a hole in the hull as it was being pulled up and the vessel began taking on water in choppy seas caused by high winds southwest if Kythnos.

The husband issued an SOS signal and made off in the life raft in order to seek help. He was found several hours later drifting away from the yacht, where his wife and three children had remained as they awaited help.

Coast guard officers were able to rescue the husband in the life boat as well as his wife and children from the yacht, before it went down as it was being towed to the port of Lavrio.

All the members of the family were reported to be in good health.
