Tender for construction of Athens’s first mosque launched

A tender for the construction of the first official mosque to go into operation in the Greek capital was launched on Monday by the Infrastructure Ministry, with the building slated for completion six months after a deal is signed.

The new mosque will be located on the premises of a former naval base in the central Athens district of Votanikos.

It will have an area of just over 1,000 square meters and the capacity to accommodate 300 people in the men’s area and 50 people in the women’s area. It will be surrounded by a park.

Members of the Greek Orthodox Church and other groups have protested its construction.
