Onassis Cardiac Center gets 7 million euros in state aid

The cash-strapped Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center was given a lease of life on Thursday following a government decision to provide 7 million euros in emergency financing to prop it up.

“There is no way we are letting the Onassis Center close,” Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said after a meeting with Alternate Finance Minister Christos Staikouras and officials of the hospital, which specializes in heart surgery and diagnosis.

It was decided that the first tranche of the funding would go toward paying off outstanding debts.

The country’s main healthcare provider, EOPYY, owes some 36 million euros for the treatment of insured patients at the center.
