Court halts removal of Thessaloniki metro antiquities

The removal of antiquities discovered at the future site of the Thessaloniki metro’s Venizelos station have been temporarily suspended following a decision by the Council of State.

Mayor Yiannis Boutaris had appealed to the country’s highest administrative court in an attempt to revoke a decision taken by the Culture Ministry foreseeing the transfer of the findings to another part of the city.

Among the antiquities discovered on the crossing of Egnatias and Venizelou streets is a 70-meter section of the city’s Byzantine era marble-paved road as well as 7th-century public buildings.

Boutaris has argued that the antiquities should remain in situ for maintenance and viewing.
