Changes in Athens pharmacy opening hours draw ire

A decision by the City of Athens to extend the opening hours of pharmacies in the Greek capital has prompted angry reactions from the association that represents the sector.

In a decision made public on Friday, the municipality said that pharmacies will now stay open until 5 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, instead of closing for three-and-a-half hours in the afternoon, and will also operate on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Athens Pharmacists’ Association said that the decision will mean the closure of many pharmacies that operate with just one chemist, and accused the municipal authority of passing the decision without consulting sector representatives first.
