Boy, 13, suspected of causing two young nephews to drown in Ileia irrigation channel

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested in Ileia, in the Peloponnese, on suspicion of pushing his two young nephews into an irrigation channel, where they drowned.

The teenager was taken into custody after his clothes were found in the water. Police said that during questioning, the 13-year-old admitted pushing the two boys, aged four and seven, into the channel.

The child allegedly said that he did so because his father, and the dead boys’ grandfather, paid more attention to the younger children than to the 13-year-old.

The suspect is the younger brother of the dead boys’ mother. The family is from Bulgaria.

The two young boys went missing on Wednesday afternoon after they left home to deliver some food to relatives nearby. Their bodies were found early on Thursday. Police had initially thought their deaths were an accident.
