Firefighters try to keep flames away from homes in eastern Attica
Forty-five firefighters with 15 fire trucks and four water-dumping craft were trying to put out a blaze that broke out on a brushy tract of land between the seaside resorts of Markopoulo and Porto Rafti near the eastern Attica coast midday on Friday.
The blaze initially began in a remote part of the Herovouni Hill, but quickly spread near residential areas as it was fanned by strong winds.
A strong firefighting presence is currently trying to stop the flames from reaching any homes.
