Three men arrested over eastern Attica fire
Three people helping with repairs at a super market in eastern Attica were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of causing a wildfire that broke out between Markopoulo and Porto Rafti a day earlier.
The three men – two Greeks aged 35 and 51 and a 50-year-old Albanian – allegedly used an angle grinder during their work, which produced sparks that set fire to dry grass.
Authorities had issued a fire warning earlier due to the hot, dry weather and strong winds.
The fire service, meanwhile, has denied claims by Golden Dawn that it had been asked to send volunteers to eastern Attica to help firefighters tackle the blaze.
The far-right party complained that police prevented some 100 members from reaching the fire.
The fire was extinguished late on Friday.
